Chandigarh worst in India in crime against elderly: NCRB

These figures were revealed in NCRB's annual publication "Crime in India 2016" which was released by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Bhainsa in Adilabad district and other sensitive areas in old city of Hyderabad along with parts of Madannapet and Saidabad are always under the radar of the intelligence and special branch sleuths to track the movement of those against whom history-sheets were opened for indulging in communal violence. This is followed by Bihar (8.4%).

Cases of rioting declined from 65,255 in 2015 to 61,974 in 2016.

The NCRB data also brought out that most of the crimes against SCs reported were crimes against women, including assault, sexual harassment, stalking, voyeurism and insult to modesty. The NCRB said the State did not register a single acid attack or an attempt to attack with acid in 2016.

As per the NCRB, UP was the state where the maximum number of crimes took place past year, while Delhi reported the highest crime rate.

The state topped the country in cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, as 11,396 cases were registered in 2016; ranking second in kidnapping and abduction of women, with 6,170 cases; and third in cases of rape, with 4,189 cases.

According to reports, Uttar Pradesh accounted for 9.5% of total IPC crime reported in the country followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9%), Maharashtra (8.8%) and Kerala (8.7%).

A very disturbing trend can be observed in "crime against children", which has been on a rise since the last three years.

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%. As many as 1,847 cases of crime against children cases were reported in the State in 2016, including 54 murders.

Atrocities/crime against scheduled tribes (STs) have also increased.

Delhi, with 3,746 cases, was followed by Mumbai with 2,183 cases, and Bengaluru (820 cases) in 2016. In Crime against women, Delhi reported highest crime rate of 160.4 in comparison to national average rate of 55.2. Mumbai also had the second highest number of rape cases, at 712 cases, after Delhi that had 1,996 cases.

However, a total of 15,379 persons were trafficked during the year including 58.7% children.

A new chapter on missing persons and children has been included to comply the Supreme Court directions along with a new table on cases related to Fake Indian Currency Notes, the NCRB report said.

The records further showed that of atotal of 41,761cases of various crimes against women recorded in 19 major metropolitan cities, Mumbai, at second place, accounted for 5,128 cases.

The good news is not limited to this alone, the report mentions decrease in murder cases by 5.2 per cent in 2015-16, from 32,127 cases in 2015 to 30,450 cases in 2016.

Delhi city topped all of NCRB crime categories - kidnapping and abduction, murder, rape, cruelty by husband and his relatives, dowry deaths, juveniles in conflict with law, economic offences - apart from cyber crimes.
