Macron convinced Trump will see U.S. interests lie inside Paris climate deal

Trump has repeatedly suggested he could pull the United States from the deal. And he said that his goal would be to "try to top" what France did. In contrast to Trump, Macron tried to carve for himself a role as the world's loudest voice for negotiations on a range of issues, as well as the foremost leader on one of the most critical global problems: climate change. "Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don't think you've heard the last of it - believe me", he declared.

"If we don't resolve the Syrian problem with Iran around the table, then we will not have an efficient response because Iran today is among the powers that have an influence on the ground", Macron said. We have to work with Russian Federation. "I didn't understand it", Macron later told reporters. He railed against North Korean President Kim Jong Un as a "rocket man on a suicide mission".

Moscow said it has concerns about Trump's position on the deal, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying Russia will defend "the consensus that was felt as a relief in the whole worldwide community, and which has really strengthened...regional stability, and even more broadly, global security".

Addressing the UN General Assembly one day after the U.S. president appeared on the same podium to launch a blistering attack on both Iran and on the 2015 accord, Rouhani warned the fate of the deal can not be decided by "one or two countries". The IAEA says its inspectors have found Iran in technical compliance with the restrictions imposed on its nuclear program, but it is for the deal signatories to decide if the accord is broken.

Trump's idea was apparently inspired by his attendance at France's Bastille Day parade earlier this summer. And when Macron landed in NY on Monday, his first stop was to meet Trump at the Palace Hotel in Manhattan.

As Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump gushed about seeing France's military might on display in the streets of Paris during his visit.

That is putting it delicately.

"To large extent because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington down Pennsylvania Avenue", Trump said.
