Walmart Partners With Google for Voice Shopping

Google and Walmart have teamed up in a deal that will enable consumers to shop online using voice recognition software.

Wal-Mart said it will begin offering "hundreds of thousands" of items for voice shopping through Google Assistant, a virtual personal assistant introduced previous year and linked to devices like Google Home and mobile phones.

Existing Walmart customers will also be able to link their Walmart account to Google to receive personalized shopping results based on online and in-store purchases. "That's why we made a decision to deeply integrate our Easy Reorder feature into Google Express".

Google introduced shopping to Home in February, letting people use voice to order essentials from more than 40 retailers like Target and Costco under its Google Express program.

Google Express, which provides online commerce and delivery for a variety of retailers in a manner not unlike Instacart, also said Wednesday it was eliminating delivery charges on all orders that meet its partner retailer's minimum order size.

Walmart, which owns the Asda chain of United Kingdom supermarkets, will offer customers a discount on picking up their items in store. "We know this means being compared side-by-side with other retailers, and we think that's the way it should be - an open and transparent shopping universe is good for customers".

Walmart next year will launch voice shopping for fresh groceries, which customers can pick up from any of its 4,700 stores across the US. Starting next month Walmart becomes the third but also the biggest store accessible from Google Express, combining Walmart's supplies and Google's machine learning to try and outdo Amazon. After this, you will be able to use Google Home and Google express by using your voice.

While that continues to be speculative, what is nearly certain is that voice shopping is here big time, and artificial intelligence too will have a big role to play in that.

Walmart has said Google's investment in natural language processing and artificial intelligence will help make voice-activated shopping even more popular.

Google is aiming to cover more of the industry by providing hassle free services to different giants.

The primary way that Walmart sees Google Express shoppers placing orders is to reorder consumable products that they've previously purchased in-store or from "First Amazon bought Whole Foods, and then... well, then Google partnered with Walmart".

The partnership is a direct challenge to Amazon's voice shopping with Alexa, which the company has been heavily pushing with promotions and discounts.
