"Barcelona have taken these actions in defence of their interests, after Neymar's contract was rescinded just a few months after he signed on until 2021", a club statement said.

The Brazil worldwide completed his protracted transfer between the two clubs earlier this month when his £198m release clause was triggered.

Neymar seemed to be everywhere as he rejuvenated French football club Paris Saint Germain in its come-from-behind 6-2 victory over Toulouse, his second match for the squad, this time at the Parc des Princes here.

"Paris Saint-Germain was surprised to learn of FC Barcelona's statement today announcing the start of legal proceedings in Spain against its former player Neymar Jr. and indicating that should Neymar Jr. fail to pay the monies claimed by his former club, Paris Saint-Germain will be held responsible to pay the outstanding sum", the statement read.

"In this lawsuit, the club claims to the player the amount already settled corresponding to the renewal premium for breach of contract; €8.5m euros in damages; and an additional 10% in arrears". He has been enjoying play, much more like he had done in Barcelona, but this time around, like many wanted or said, he is not in the shadow of Lionel Messi.

The lawsuit according to the club was submitted on 11 August to the Labour Tribunal in Barcelona. "The club also requests that PSG subsidise the amounts in the event that the player can not take responsibility".

"Barcelona made a decision to take these actions in defence of their interests, after a unilateral termination of contract urged by Neymar Jr a few months after signing the renewal until the end of the year 2021", a statement read. "I am getting better physically and I can still improve yet", the 25-year-old said. "I have a lot of friends there, I hope things get better for Barca and that they go back to being a team that can compete".
