12 killed, many injured in Uttakal Express train accident in UP

According to a statement from railway ministry, the 14521/14522 Ambala-Delhi-Ambala Intercity Express, 18478 Haridwar-Puri Utkal Kalinga Express and the 14682 Jalandhar- New Delhi Intercity Express, which will commence journey tomorrow, stood cancelled.

The local administration is carrying out rescue operations and a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been at the scene.

The train Utkal Express derailed in Muzaffarnagar's Khatauli area at around 5:50 p.m. local time.

The Indian railway ministry has ordered an inquiry into the accident.

Indian railway minister Suresh Prabhu said he instructed officials to rush to the spot.

"I am personally monitoring situation".

"Most of the rescue work was carried out by locals".

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, Sharma said. "My thoughts are with the families of the deceased", Modi said and wished a speedy recovery for injured in the accident.

Saturday's accident is at least the fourth major passenger train derailment this year and the third in Uttar Pradesh in 2017.

"Our final figures say 20 people lost their lives and 92 were injured, out of whom 22 have sustained grievous injuries", Mohd Jamshed from the Railway Board told the media here.
