Fresh Kid Ice, 2 Live Crew Co-Founder, Dies at 53

Fresh Kid Ice (real name Christopher Wong Won) of the raunchy veteran rap group 2 Live Crew has passed away at age 53.

In 1984, Wong Won co-formed 2 Live Crew with rappers DJ Mr. Mixx and wonderful V. Shortly after, they teamed up with Campbell and moved to Miami.

According to the group's manager (via TMZ), Fresh Kid Ice passed away just before 8 a.m. early Thursday morning (Jul. 13) at a Miami hospital due to an undisclosed medical condition.

After forming the group and realizing their success, the group later joined Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell's record label and brought him into the fold.

Fresh Kid and Campbell were arrested in 1990 after a live performance police deemed obscene and lewd. A judge ruled he violated federal obscenity laws.

He co-founded 2 Live Crew with DJ Mr. Mixx (David Hobbs) and Amazing Vee (Yuri Vielot) while still living in California but they relocated to Florida when their 1984 debut single "The Revelation" became a surprise hit there. Even so, the group reformed in 1994 and lasted until 1998.

The rapper, who served four years in the Air Force before entering the music world, went on to form his own record label, Chinaman Records.

In 2015, Fresh Kid Ice released a memoir, My Rise 2 Fame: The Tell All Autobiography of a Hip Hop Legend.

'The Asians were there in the beginning of hip-hop - but as DJs, ' he said. "People we lost a legend!" In 2009 and 2010, Won suffered two unrelated strokes and had to learn how to walk and speak again, Vibe reports.
