Wildfires spread throughout 5 states forces evacuation of thousands

In Utah, more than a thousand firefighters are still struggling to contain a huge fire that started on June 17 near Brian Head, a ski town.

A 400-acre (162-hectare) fire in Mariposa County on the western Sierra foothills is 10 percent surrounded.

Firefighters in southern Utah are in quite a battle these days.

Evacuation orders for now will remain in effect for Upper Bear Valley, Horse Valley, Beaver Dam, Castle Valley, Blue Springs, Rainbow Meadows and Second Left Hand Canyon.

He tells dispatchers to send authorities "before he burns down Brian Head".

The Frye Fire in southern Arizona covered more than 37,000 acres as of Sunday, with 39% of the perimeter contained, the forest service at Coronado National Forest said.

The blaze broke out late on Monday afternoon and quickly grew to almost 1.5 square miles (200 hectares), the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said.

Firefighters will be patrolling containment lines around the communities and responding as necessary to any potential fire activity. Another wildfire in Arizona forced the evacuation of a town with about 1,400 residents. The sheriff's office in a statement did not say how many people had been evacuated.

Those statistics don't count any of the fires that began burning in June, including the 27 fires now burning across 11 states. Winds also creating unsafe conditions.

Meanwhile in California, firefighters had two major blazes under enough control to allow evacuated residents to return to their homes.

Two people were taken to hospital after the crash and subsequent auto blaze that caused the wildfire on Monday afternoon.

A new wildfire that broke out Tuesday has prompted evacuations for dozens more homes in San Bernardino County.

The blaze burning in Riverside County about 80 miles (129 kilometers) east of Los Angeles is only 10 percent contained Tuesday morning.

Utah crews were finishing fighting fires Monday at Lincoln Beach, located near Payson (2,252 acres burned) and at Dry Hills in Uintah County (435 acres burned). Graham in southeastern Arizona is 43 percent contained.
