The Salvation Army has been associated with donuts since World War 1 - it all started on the battlefields of France in 1917, when Salvation Army "lassies" (young female Salvationists) used make shift arrangements to prepare fresh donuts for the troops. The holiday is traditionally celebrated on the first Friday of June.

And, while it is not a donut shop, Tom & Chee will be offering free grilled cheese donuts and $2 fancy grilled cheese with any sandwich purchase.

Donut forget that grocery stores have their own bakeries and many gas stations will be participating in National Donut Day as well. Manager Brien Murphy said FedNuts will be very "generous" with their donuts and offer free samples all day, though he wouldn't promise that everyone who walks through the door will get a freebie.

Duck Donuts is giving customers a free, made-to-order doughnut of their choice with any purchase. Because of this, the Salvation Army will be collecting donations at several of these locations. You will also receive a BOGO half dozen coupon with your purchase (valid through the end of August).

At two locations in Clifton, New Jersey and Garden City, New York, the restaurant is offering a red wine-glazed doughnut on its menu for the holiday.

"We're making a lot of donuts", Taniguchi said.
