June. 16: After visiting Steve Scalise, the majority whip who was shot when a gunman opened fire during a congressional Republican baseball practice in Virginia, President Donald Trump admitted that the congressman was in a "more difficult" condition than was initially realized.

The Louisiana Republican is recovering from "substantial damage" he suffered when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

In a statement posted to his Twitter account, Mr Scalise was said to be "more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones".

House Majority Whip Scalise, 51, was shot in the hip by a rifle-welding critic of the president who sprayed bullets on United States lawmakers practising for an annual baseball game in the Washington suburb of Alexandria.

A congressional women's softball team has hit the practice field in Washington amid heavier security, a day after an attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game.

Hodgkinson, who had lashed out on social media against Trump and Republicans, was shot and killed by police officers including members of Scalise's security detail who responded.

On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that it continues to process evidence and "to assess the potential motivations of the single shooter".

Republicans and Democrats have swapped political insults for friendly rivalry at their annual congressional baseball game in honour of House of Representatives politician Steve Scalise, critically injured in a shooting rampage. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.

"[Scalise] will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones".

Scalise and three others were shot Wednesday morning at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Va. Though, the postgame scene became one of unity and camaraderie as the Democrats presented the trophy to Scalise, who is still in critical condition after the attack.

"I purchased my ticket a few weeks ago, but with what happened yesterday, it has more meaning to me today", said D.C. resident Amanda Linton.

But he added: "We fully expect him to be able to walk", and "hopefully run". Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector, had been living out of his van near the park.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference.

Fragments from the gunshot wound could pose an issue but doctors said that attempting to remove them would cause greater stress to his recovery.

Hodgkinson also contacted the office of Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., at least 10 times over the past year, a Bost spokesman has said, characterizing the emails and phone calls as negative but not threatening.

The first pitch was thrown by one of the two heroes of the shooting, member of the Capitol Police David Bailey, who along with colleague Crystal Griner are credited with taking down the gunman.

A spokesman for George Washington University Hospital said that Matt Mika, a lobbyist wounded in the attack, was improving, and that as of Thursday night his condition had been upgraded from critical to serious.
