Jewar airport in Greater Noida gets Centre's nod

The plan for building a second airport at Jewar for NCR was first submitted by the then UP chief minister Mayawati in 2002. "For the sake of NCR and NCR's connectivity having a second airport is vitally important and that is what Noida worldwide airport will accomplish", Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said.

The new facility, expected to be spread across 3,000 hectares of land, will be the second worldwide airport to serve the catchment areas of the NCR after the Indira Gandhi global Airport (IGIA).

After 14 years of political one-upmanship between the Centre and Uttar Pradesh, which was marked by respective regimes by different political parties, decks have been cleared for setting up a Greenfield global airport at Jewar in Greater Noida.

The Noida International Airport will be located 72Kms from IGI Airport and 65 Kms from Hindon Air Force station Ghaziabad.

"During the meeting, representatives of the U.P. government have confirmed to us that farmers are quite willing to provide land for airport development on a negotiated settlement basis, so there may not be any need for forcible land acquisition", Mr. Choubey said.

He further said that the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority has cleared 3,000 hectares of land for airport, a PTI report said.

The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority has notified 3,000 hectares of land in Jewar for a world-class worldwide airport.

There will be one runway in the first phase.

Also at the briefing, Minister of State Jayant Sinha told media persons that within a year, the land procurement process is expected to be completed to start the bidding process for identifying the company which will develop the airport.

Civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said on Twitter that "in-principle clearance has been granted" for the airport.

"We thank the central government for giving approval for an airport in Jewar".

The airport will be built using a public-private partnership model with GMR Infrastructure.

Thanking the Centre for clearing the airport, Uttar Pradesh Health Minister Sidddharth Nath Singh said that the tha aprt will not only be the cargo hub but will also cater to the need of domestic and worldwide traffic. In the case of the Navi Mumbai airport, the GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which won the bid to run the airport, also had a RoFR due to an existing airport at Mumbai.
