Trump embraces Israel, but Russian ties still trail him

Mr. Trump, who met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier Tuesday in the West Bank, said the objective of his trip to the Middle East is ridding the world of such terrorist attacks.

"So many young, beautiful, innocent people living and enjoying their lives murdered by evil losers", Trump said after meeting Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the occupied West Bank.

Expressing optimism that a peace deal could finally be brokered to end the almost 70-year-old conflict and suggested a resolution may not be hard to obtain it.

Welcoming Trump, Netanyahu said, "I also look forward to working closely with you to advance peace in our region, because you have noted so succinctly that common dangers are turning former enemies into partners".

Trump also expressed an even loftier hope than an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement: "I also firmly believe that if Israel and the Palestinians can make peace, it will begin a process of peace all throughout the Middle East, and that would be an awesome accomplishment".

The Palestinian leader affirmed his willingness to cooperate with the US administration to conclude a historic peace agreement with Israel.

But while Trump said earlier this month that he believed brokering peace is "maybe not as hard as people have thought", he measured his comments on Tuesday. It's not easy, but we agree with him - peace is possible. Then Trump piped up and said, I never said the word Israel.

A Palestinian stabbed and lightly wounded a border policeman in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya on Tuesday before being shot and wounded, police said. Trump has also retreated from a campaign pledge to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, bending to the same diplomatic and security concerns as other presidents who have made similar promises.

Trump vowed not to refer to attackers as "monsters" any longer "because they would like that term". They recited psalms. In contrast to Trump's usual bombastic style, it was a muted event, totally tweet-free. "It's part of the West Bank", part of lands that Israel annexed in the Six-Day War in 1967.

Still, the presidential visit is rich with symbolism, speaking volumes to followers of Middle East politics.
