Cornyn has risen to one of the highest positions in republican senate leadership.

Graham wasn't the only senator on Sunday to suggest Cornyn could face resistance in the chamber.
All things considered, though, by Monday Cornyn's chances of getting the appointment seemed to be tanking.
On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declined to put his weight behind his top deputy, instead pushing another potential candidate, Merrick Garland, who was former President Barack Obama's Supreme Court pick before the majority leader led an effort to scuttle his nomination previous year. Yet whoever takes the Federal Bureau of Investigation job will be on notice that Trump will expect personal loyalty.
