The 11 members of the International Olympic Committee's Evaluation Commission today began a three-day visit of Paris as they study the French capital's bid to host the 2024 Games.

Paris and Los Angeles were left as the last two cities in the race after Rome, Budapest and Hamburg pulled out amid widespread public opposition to the multibillion-dollar cost of staging the games.

The 2024 host city is scheduled to be selected on September 13 in Lima, Peru. "This visit has certainly confirmed our opinion that Los Angeles has developed an excellent proposal".

Estanguet also put aside the discussion about the 2028 Games, which has been considered by the International Olympic Committee to announce each of the two candidate cities as hosts for 2024 and 2028 Games to avoid leaving the other as a losing side.

Among the 44 members added on Friday to the commission, whose aim is to ensure athletes are involved in all aspects of the city's plans and bid for the Games, were Olympic champions Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Ashton Eaton and Nastia Liukin. "We feel very confident in our ability to deliver", Garcetti said. Sources inside the Paris bid team told Reuters that the meeting would probably happen "on Tuesday morning".

On Friday, Garcetti said the city "would listen if the rules change".

"It's a big problem", he added stressing that 2024 would be a much better option than 2028, "this venue can not wait".

The IOC's Evaluation Committee made up of senior Olympic officials will visit Paris for three days from Sunday, arriving directly from a similar inspection tour of Los Angeles.

The Coliseum would once again host athletics, the premier event of the games, and U.S. track and field star Allyson Felix was on hand to greet delegates for Thursday's site visit. I know Paris has at times said 'no, it's '24 or nothing.' I really do believe in this movement.

He also shared with Bach France's long-term commitment to the Olympic movement.

According to a report from, the committee chair stated that Los Angeles would pose "no major risk". Meanwhile, it also presented the beauty and the spirit of the city.

To win, Paris will need to compete with the vast popularity of the Games in Los Angeles where in an independent survey a year ago 88 per cent of Angelenos say they support the bid.

"It's an incredible project, with sports venues that go beyond stadiums, iconic places like the Champs Elysées, the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, the Champ de Mars, the Grand Palais", said Estanguet.

"I think that the "1984 boys", Mayor Garcetti and Casey Wasserman, bring a powerful combination of intelligence, enthusiasm and energy to this task", Baumann said. Paris, on the other hand, must build an expensive aquatic centre and Olympic Village for the athletes, two costly undertakings.
