During Microsoft's event yesterday, the company unveiled the new Surface Laptop that's a pretty standard laptop but with Surface-like features including a touchscreen, a fabric-coated keyboard, and Surface Pen support. Microsoft has introduced Windows 10 S today which is its very own Chrome OS rival.

The Surface Laptop is 14.5 millimeters thick and weighs 1.25 kilograms.

Panos Panay, Microsoft devices corporate vice president, says the Microsoft Surface Laptop was created "to refresh the classic laptop form factor that our customers, especially college students, have been asking for; and make a Surface that works seamlessly to showcase the best of Windows 10S". Though Microsoft hasn't announced specific pricing details yet, it has said that the Surface Laptop will start at $999, which we can assume is the price for the 128GB Core i5 model.

This means that desktop apps, in order to be compatible to run on the latest Windows 10 version, will need to be specially packaged and listed in the Windows Store.

The laptop runs Windows 10 S, a streamlined version of the ubiquitous operating system that is aimed primarily at classrooms. Thanks to this feature, according to Panay, the battery life of the device is as long as 14.5 hours.

Along with restricting users to Windows Store apps and games, the new version of Windows 10 will also not allow you to change your default web browser. And the laptop will be available in four colors: platinum, graphite gold, cobalt blue, and burgundy. Schools now running Windows 10 Pro will get free copies of Windows 10S and free Office 365 productivity software. More expensive configurations incorporate the latest Intel Core i7 processor, run on the 16GB worth of RAM and offer internal storage that can be as high as a terabyte. However the same should be available this coming Summer for educators who want to get their hands on it before the school year begins this Fall. The Surface Laptop will come out on June 15. Those purchasing devices running Windows 10 S will also have the choice to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for $49, which if you're wanting to do this on a number of PCs that cost could soon rack up.
