Perdue, whose confirmation stalled for months, did not have a hand in crafting that budget and has expressed support for numerous programs that could be cut. "I congratulate him on his confirmation, and I look forward to working with him on crafting and implementing our next farm bill". I want to be the first in this august body to call my cousin, Sonny Perdue, by his new title, Mr. Secretary.

At the hearing, Mr Perdue said he would be a "tenacious advocate and fighter" for rural America when dealing with the White House and other agencies and noted a growing middle class around the world that is hungry for U.S. products. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, praised him by stating that during his confirmation hearing, "Governor Perdue demonstrated a real understanding of the challenges facing the agriculture industry and a willingness to work together to find solutions." Sen.

Isakson said in a speech on the Senate floor that Perdue's "experience and leadership in public service, business and agriculture will benefit our nation".

Senator Debbie Stabenow, the top Democrat on the agriculture committee, which needs to craft a new farm bill over the coming year, warned that Mr Trump's slow pace in nominating Mr Perdue and preparing his paperwork shows the president has treated rural America as "an afterthought".

A statement from the National Turkey Federation (NTF) said the following: "Perdue understands that agriculture is the foundation of our nation and that, given a strong economic environment; America has an unmatched capacity to help feed a hungry world".

"Secretary Perdue knows agriculture; I think he'll do well as agriculture secretary", Maschhoff says.

Many farmers are relying on Perdue to revive their businesses as they are suffering a downturn in the market. This is not, however, the same family as runs Perdue Farms, the large poultry company. The order comes shortly after the President announced the US will put a tariff on Canadian soft wood imports in response to the neighbor to the North's longstanding tariff on diary products that hurt American farmers.

During the signing, President Trump commented on the current trade dispute with Canada over dairy product pricing. Senate Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer of NY and Dick Durbin of IL voted "yes". Debbie Stabenow of MI, the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee.
